lingaraj : The Lingaraja temple is said to have been built first by the ruler Yayati Kesari in the 7th century who shifted his capital from Jaipur to Bhubaneshwar. Bhubaneshwar remained as the Kesari capital, till Nripati Kesari founded Cuttck in the 10th century. Inscriptions from the period of the Kalinga King Anangabhima III from the 13th century are seen here.


Designed to be a huge chariot for the Sun God Surya, the intricately carved Sun Temple was constructed in the 13th century. It stands 30 meters high on 12 massive wheels. Erotic carvings similar to those on the Khajuraho temples are a renowned feature.The Sun Temple can be visited on a day trip from either Puri or Bhubaneshwar. However, it's worthwhile seeing the temple in the late afternoon, after the day trippers have departed, and staying a night in Konark. You'll appreciate the more peaceful atmosphere. The temple is open from sunrise until sunset.


Puri, known as the sacred abode of Lord Jagannath, is one of the most visited tourist destinations in entire India. It is situated on the eastern side of Orissa and lies about 60 km away from the capital city of Bhubaneswar. Puri is also known for its salubrious beaches and many holy shrines. Countless devotees swarm at the fine white sands to have a purification dip at the Bay of Bengal. The Puri beach has now become a favorite haunt of both Indian and foreign beach lovers.


Lying on the eastern coast of Odisha and near the holy city of Puri, Chilka Lake is one of the most sought-after tourist attractions of Orissa. The source of the lake is the Mahanadi River, which drains into it. The Lake is a paradise for bird watchers and countless domestic and migrating birds dwell beside the Lake making the Lake picturesque to view. Chilka Lake is adored by many for its exotic splendor and is one of the largest lakes in entire Asia stretching over an area of 1,100 sq km.

Vaital DeulTemple

One of the oldest temples (late 8th century), Vaital Deul Temple’s striking feature is the shape of its sanctuary tower. The semi-cylindrical shape of its roof--a leading example of khakhara order of temples--bears an affinity to the Dravidian gopuram of the South India temples.
