Rayagada district came into existence on 2nd October 1992. It is famous for its longest human history. Rayagada was ruled by Kalinga empire during the reign of Ashoka. According to historical journals, the hilly tracks between Bansadhara and Nagabali was famous for spices. Many rock inscriptions and literatures were found which provides information about the rulers of this place.

Geographical Location

Rayagada is located at 19.17 degrees North Latitude and 83.42 degrees Longitude It has an average elevation of 207 meters (679 feet). This place is covered with meadows, forests, water falls and terraced valleys. It has a scenic beauty of its own.

Rayagada district is spread over an area of 7584.7 Sq. kms. It is inhabited by many communities. The major inhabitants of this district are tribal people. It has a significant Telugu population due to better communication with neighbouring state of Andhra Pradesh. Major languages spoken in this district are Oriya, Telugu and Soura (tribal language).


How to reach?

Rayagada is approximately 440 kms away form the state capital. It is connected by rail and road to major cities like Bhubaneswar, Raipur, Visakhapatanam, Koraput, Kolkata, Chennai, Delhi and Hyderabad. Both bus service and trains are available from most major cities of Orissa. So one can opt either for bus or train to reach there.
